Weekly Distribution Changes for 11/25/22

Neuberger Berman MLP and Energy Income Fund Inc (NML) has increased its distribution from $0.0227 a month to $0.0584 a month, a 157.27% increase. This is a very interesting fund. Until it just announced more than doubling its distribution, unlike most funds in the MLP sector, it maintained a very conservative distribution yield (around 3% to current market price). Keeping such a modest yield, (NML) used the excess income to reduce the funds negative accumulated earnings over the past three years cutting its estimated number of distributions deficit in half, from a negative -497 distributions in May '21 to only -239 as of today. I'll be curious to see if more than doubling its distribution will put the fund on the familiar path of capital destruction, in line with most of its peers in the same sector.

First Trust Energy Infrastructure (FIF) - If you are a subscriber to the 'Closed End Fund Mastery' Super Screener and Interactive Report, this fund should look familiar to you. It is still the highest ranked fund in 'Closed End Fund Mastery.' This is now the second distribution increase (FIF) has made in the last three months. Caution: This is an energy related fund that can be volatile in nature, but (FIF) is carrying a very modest yield at approximately 5.13% to its current market value.

If you've been investing in closed end funds for a while, chances are you have already been seduced by the enormous yields offered by Cornerstone Strategic Value (CLM) (Yield 26%) and Cornerstone Total Return Fund (CRF) (Yield 25.72%).

All in all, both (CLM) and (CRF) produce pretty decent long-term returns (returns in graph assume dividend reinvestment in the fund), but basically, the formula for both of these funds is the same; raise a lot of capital, return it to unit holders (ROC Ann Avg 62.58%) and repeat. This is not a deceptive practice. Certain funds serve certain purposes. These two funds provide a high income (cash flow) with minimum tax consequences by basically giving you back your own money, but it generates decent returns in the meantime (3YR - 8.74% and 5YR - 9.35%).
